Since it was established there have been four trials and over 20 treatment systems tested under controlled and equal conditions. Each system was dosed daily with a measure volume of raw sewerage, timed and distributed to stimulate the loading from a typical domestic dwelling. Samples were collected by laboratory staff regularly from the effluent and treated effluent from each system and analysed by an IANZ accredited laboratory on site. While the original focus of the trial was nutrient reduction in response to regional concerns, the site has now evolved into a national testing program, partnered by Water New Zealand, that provides benchmarking for a broad range of contaminants. Consumers and councils are increasingly demanding independent verification of manufacturer claims of system performance. This facility provides the ideal vehicle for delivering this.
