The project called for all water needs to be supplied via on-site via rain water tanks. The rainwater supply is limited by the availability of the roof catchment. The collection capability was 218kL of water per year versus a demand of over 653kL per year. Rainwater therefore could only meet 21% of demand.

A waste water treatment system to cater for toilet flushing was required to meet the 295kL/year needed for that function and be an integral part of meeting on-site water requirements.

NOTE: While there were no precedents for recycling from small on-site systems and no guidelines that anticipate this situation in the Brisbane area, council were willing to consider an application subject to developing appropriate design standards via a plan to assess risk, controls and define on-going management and monitoring.

The direct benefit is the contribution of the NovaClear Black & Grey Reclycling system in helping the site achieve long term water sustainability and meeting the water balance needs.

All wastewater from the toilets, hand basins and kitchen will be collected to an NovaClear on-site treatment plant.

The Treatment Plant includes advanced secondary treatment, filtration and disinfection processes producing recycled water equivalent to Class A standard.(as defined by the QLD Water Recycling Guidelines). Recycled Water is used primarily for toilet flushing with excess discharged through irrigation to landscaped areas.

Long term benefit of the system is in assisting the site in meeting its water need with minimal external requirement as well as been a flagship project on how sites and projects can better manage water and put less pressure on the water grid in a water restricted zone

The Kiosk require is 2.7kl/day of water per day, 30% for washing and cleaning, 30% for toilet flushing , 30% for hand washing and food preparation. 100l/day for drinking.

The system provides 30% of the site demand for water as well as supplying surplus t o landscaped areas.
(50 year rainfall analysis showed and average yearly rainfall of 1.064mm/year)
