Evaporation Prevention

Evaporation is the single largest cause of water loss. Every square metre of water surface loses about 8 litres to evaporation every day in the warmer months. This means that even a small farm dam of 1,000 square metres will lose 8,000 litres per day. A 100 hectare dam loses 8 megalitres per day, or 56 megalitres every week.

In Australia, 70% of yearly rainfall is lost to evaporation. One of the effects of climate change in Australia will be an increase in evaporation in some regions

The table below shows evaporation losses for typical dam sizes:

body of water

Dam Area Evaporation At 8 mm per Day
Daily Weekly
1000 sq m 8'000 Lt 56'000 Lt
5000 sq m 40'000 Lt 280'000 Lt
1 hectare 80'000 Lt 560'000 Lt
5 hectares 400'000 Lt 2.8 ML
20 hectares 1.6 ML 11.2 ML
1 square kilometer 8 ML 56 ML

AquaFilm can be used anywhere there is a requirement to reduce evaporation losses up to 70%!

AquaFilm: anti-evaporation liquid

Aquafilm logo

Aquafilm is a unique silicone-based liquid which spreads across the water surface, forming a very thin film
and greatly reducing evaporation.

Benefits: AquaFilm achieves
evaporation savings of up to 70%!

Technical: Silicones are used in hundreds of applications including water-repellent sealers, hair conditioners and lipsticks. They are also used to reduce foam in commercial food applications and non stick sprays. The concept of a monolayer is not new – it’s been known for many years that some industrial alcohols can reduce evaporation in this way, but alcohols degrade very quickly and must be re-applied every couple of days. Aquafilm uses the same concept, but with advanced materials to greatly improve its performance and longevity.

AquaFilm - Environment & safety

Silicones are used in hundreds of applications including water-repellent sealers, hair conditioners and lipsticks. They are also used to reduce foam in commercial food applications and as non-stick sprays in the baking trade.

An independent water quality report has concluded that:

AquaFilm added to the surface of water bodies does not affect the chemistry of the water

The film of AquaFilm does not prevent the water from oxygenation

there is no evidence that aquatic life suffers a negative effect

AquaFilm does not produce any effects that would be deleterious for potable water quality.

AquaFilm MF: Mosquito fighting anti evaporation liquid

Mosquitoes are estimated to transmit disease to more than 700 million people annually in Africa, South America, Central America, Mexico and much of Asia with millions of resulting deaths. Mosquitoes are known to carry many infectious diseases from several different classes of microorganisms, including viruses and parasites. Mosquito borne illnesses include Malaria, West Nile Virus and Yellow Fever. These infections are normally rare to certain geographic areas. For instance Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever is a viral, mosquito borne illness usually regarded only as a risk in the tropics. Other viral diseases like epidemic poly arthritis, Rift Valley fever, Ross River Fever, St. Louis encephalitis, West Nile virus (WNV), Japanese encephalitis, La Crosse encephalitis and several other encephalitis type diseases are carried by several different mosquitoes.

Aquafilm

WaterGurus AquaFilm MF (mosquito stopper) was invented by an associated Australian company and distributed by WaterGurus.

It spreads rapidly across the water surface, forming a very thin film. AquaFilm MF has a physical action rather than a chemical action, so no toxic chemicals are in the formula. The thin film on the water surface kills immature mosquito stages and disrupts the mosquito life cycle. It is a simple but highly effective process. It is applied by simply adding it to the water surface.

Trials by Health Ministries around the world have confirmed its effectiveness in killing mosquito larvae and pupae. Supporting information is available on request:

no egg rafts were laid in the containers with the Aquafilm MF

there was 100% mortality of the pupae.

Pool Protect: Anti-evaporation liquid for pools - Home and Resort

Similar to AquaFilm, Pool Protect is a unique silicone-based liquid which spreads across the pool surface, forming a very thin film and greatly reducing evaporation. Evaporation is the single largest cause of water loss. Every square metre of water surface loses about 8 litres to evaporation every day in the warmer months.

Pool Protects limits the escape of water vapour, and trials have shown that evaporation can be reduced by more than 50%

Applying Pool Protect

Simply pour Pool Protect onto the water and watch it spread across the surface!
For a standard domestic pool with an area of 30 square meters, an application of 25ml twice weekly during summer will be sufficient. A 500ml bottle will last nearly three months.

Using your Pool

You can swim in your pool at any time. Pool Protect is virtually invisible on the surface.

Is Pool Protect safe?

Yes it is! Silicones are used in a range of products. They degrade in the environment to harmless silicates. An independent report on Pool Protect has concluded that it has no negative impacts on water quality.
